Weekly Specials
Spanish
Language and customs are presented in each classroom. Stories, songs and rhymes are used to enhance the learning process. Children will learn names of colors, numbers, opposites, greetings, weather, days and months of the year. Children are free to explore Spanish materials and picture word cards daily during work cycles in the classrooms.
Mindfulness
Mindfulness is paying attention to what is happening in the present moment. Mindfulness can help us learn to focus our attention. It can also help us calm down when we are angry, sad, frustrated, or have any difficult emotion. Mindfulness can help us feel happy too. Children will be practicing mindful bodies, listening to the singing bowl, breathing exercises, observing their emotions and thoughts, calming exercises, feeling gratitude, mindful movement, and mindful eating among others.
Music
Music at the Unitarian Montessori School includes singing, moving, listening to and using rhythmic and melodic instruments to make music. Music lessons are taught in a small group setting by Ms. Mary Ellen and introduce the young learners to the fundamentals of music theory, appreciation of music as skilled listeners, and the fun of music as a medium for movement and rhythmic play. In the classroom, carefully chosen instrumental music is played quietly during the work cycles or rest time. Listening stations and prepared music work is available on shelves for learners to choose and complete at their discretion.
Yoga
Even our youngest students are introduced to Yoga with a great success. They eagerly participate and follow simple instructions on stretching and maintaining yoga positions. Positions incorporate animal names and alphabet. Through Yoga our students are given the opportunity to control and relax their bodies as well as calm their minds.
